Why Education Matters
Education is more important than this short list, but this short list consists of the foundation of what education can provide.
Education gives us knowledge of the world, allowing us to understand other people and their cultures. It provides a clearer path to a quality career. It also builds character and allows us the opportunity to understand ourselves.
The Urban League of the Upstate, Spartanburg, has been working with teens for over 20 years and continues to offer programming in college and career readiness, as well as social development. Its Project Ready is a signature program of the National Urban League that provides enhanced academic and social support to students ages 11-18 as they prepare for post-secondary success. Students are expected to make academic progress, benefit from cultural enrichment opportunities, and be trained in school navigational and life skills development.
The Project Ready Post-Secondary Success Program is a unique and comprehensive approach to addressing the academic, personal, and social needs of students. Some of the social needs workshops offered are: Leadership, Communication, Presentation, Networking, Mindfulness, Substance Abuse Prevention, Suicide Awareness, Internet Safety, Peer Pressure, Bullying, Teen Pregnancy Prevention, and more.
The Project Ready Curriculum integrates academic preparation for college with life skills development and a social, global, and cultural awareness. This program currently targets high school students (9th - 12th graders) and works with students and their families to:
Increase college awareness
Improve navigational and life skills
Raise confidence and self-awareness around good decision making
Gain greater understanding and appreciation for one’s own cultural identity and diversity
Understand the correlation between post-secondary success and income
