Friday, August 16, 2019
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
We are very excited to announce Dr. David Walsh will be the keynote speaker at the 2019 Adolescent Health Conference.
Grit: Why Kids Need It and How to Get It
“Grit,” technically called “executive function,” is critical for school and life success. It determines how we learn as opposed to what we learn and includes the ability to concentrate, manage impulses and behavior, passion, perseverance, resilience, focus, and motivation. Dr. Dave Walsh will explain why it so important and will describe the six threats that undermine it.
Lack of sleep
A culture of “more, fast, easy, and fun”
Misuse and overuse of technology
Disappearance of free play
More importantly, he will provide practical strategies for assuring that 21st century youth develop the grit traits that will ensure their success and happiness.
Local professionals will host breakout sessions in a variety of topics designed to sharpen your skills and give you new tools to use in your work with teens.
Currently we are working on confirming CEU’s with governing bodies. More information to come.
This conference will not just talk about what youth want and need from schools and community but we will hear directly from teens themselves on how we can create a better community to improve youth outcomes. Join us for a panel of experts, our very own Spartanburg County Youth, in a discussion of youth culture, engagement and understanding of what is needed to improve adolescent health and how teens and adults can work together to create change.
