Summer Jobs for Teens

Finding a summer job can be tricky as a teen. Learn how the Spartanburg County Public Library is helping teens find jobs and gain valuable expereince for their resumes!

This week's blog is written by Susan Myers with the Spartanburg County Public Libraries

Job hunting can seem overwhelming, but good news--the Teen Hub at the Headquarters Library is staffed every hour the library is open and has resources to assist you! We have free wi-fi and internet accessible computers with resume software already installed. If you don’t even know where to begin, we maintain a job board advertising local businesses that are currently hiring and who hire teens! Maybe you’re interested in flexible options like babysitting or starting your own business, or you want to research different careers to find the one right for you. We can help!

If you’re looking for your first job and need items to add to your resume, we offer many opportunities to volunteer and get experience. Get involved in our Teen Advisory Group by attending our monthly meeting and have a say in library services for teens. For more traditional work experience, consider participating in our teen volunteer program, Volunteens. Open Volunteen hours are every Saturday from 9-11am and are limited to the first 3 teens. If Saturdays don’t work for you, Volunteen hours are also available by appointment. An excellent, but more competitive, way to earn experience (and money!) is our quarterly Teen Department Internship. Interns assist with programming, help with social media posts, and lead their own program (among many, many other thing)! Interns work a total of 130 hours over the course of 4 months and receive a $500 stipend upon the successful completion of the internship.

We promote teen volunteer opportunities and the internship on our social media accounts. Find and follow @scplteens on Instagram or Facebook to stay in the loop! You can also sign up for program text notifications by texting @scplteens to 81010. Our best resource is our staff, so we encourage you to stop by the Teen Hub and let us help you on the road to gainful employment!

All teen programming is open to teens ages 12-18 or in grades 7-12. For more information about Teen Services at SCPL, call 864-596-3506, email us at teens@infodepot.org, or visit our website www.spartanburglibraries.org.
